Burns, the platform allows users to invest in movies, actors, directors, and other assets with virtual currency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Factors such as box office performance, critical reception, and perception by the Hollywood industry affect the value of these assets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-evolution-of-the-hollywood-stock-exchange\">Evolution of the Hollywood Stock Exchange<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cantor Fitzgerald, a financial service company, <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/movies\/theindustry\/67275\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bought the HSX<\/a> in 2001. They had ambitious plans, including turning it into a real trading exchange. However, following the 9\/11 attacks, these plans were put on hold.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2007, Robert Swagger created the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theringer.com\/movies\/2018\/11\/15\/18091620\/box-office-futures-dodd-frank-mpaa-recession\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Media Derivatives Inc. (MDEX)<\/a> &#8211; an effort to launch an electronic futures exchange for contracts based on box office results.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He believed that his experience in risk management could help investors and Hollywood studios reduce the losses associated with the unpredictable nature of the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cantor Fitzgerald also resurrected the plan for real-life trading of HSX and decided to start the process of getting regulatory approval.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) began the process of ratifying these futures contract concepts in 2009. In June 2010, they approved Media Derivatives\u2019 application, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/PressRoom\/PressReleases\/5834-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stating the following<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe contracts are intended to allow participants in the motion picture industry to manage the financial risks associated with the production and distribution of motion pictures.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Motion Picture Association of America, representing the six major movie studios, ended up opposing these contracts with the motive that they would open up the possibility of market manipulation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other concerns included hurting ticket sales and putting additional pressure on studios. Finally, they added that they had no intent to use this system as a hedging mechanism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the approval from the CFTC, the movie futures contracts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2010-jul-02-la-fi-ct-facetime-20100702-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">didn\u2019t pass<\/a> Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pros-of-the-hollywood-stock-exchange\">Pros of the Hollywood Stock Exchange<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the benefits that the HSX was dubbed to bring included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-low-barrier-to-entry\">Low Barrier to Entry<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With an internet connection, anybody can sign up for an HSX account to start trading virtual shares in movies and actors.
